Five FMCSA datasets.
One carrier score.

FMCSA publishes carrier safety data across five separate programs and datasets. None of them are joined at the carrier level. WeighStation ingests all five, links them by DOT number, and produces a single scored intelligence record per carrier.

The result: a complete safety, financial stability, and compliance profile for every active carrier — updated daily from FMCSA's open data program.

01
FMCSA Company Census
Every FMCSA-registered carrier — DOT number, legal name, DBA, entity type, authority status, fleet size, driver count, physical location. 4.42M records.
Federal
02
SMS BASIC Measures
Safety Measurement System scores across 7 BASIC categories — Unsafe Driving, HOS Compliance, Driver Fitness, Controlled Substances, Vehicle Maintenance, Hazmat, Crash Indicator. Percentile rankings against peer carriers.
Federal
03
FMCSA Crash File
Every FMCSA-reportable crash — date, fatalities, injuries, tow-away. 4.93M records. Trailing 24-month window used in scoring; full history retained for due diligence.
Federal
04
Insurance History
Insurance cancellation events — method (TERM vs. CANCL), insurer, coverage gap periods. This is the moat: 33,454 cancellation events across 3,920 carriers — not visible on SAFER.
Federal
05
Authority History
Operating authority grant and revocation events. 4.9M records. 291,848 active carriers carry revocation history invisible on FMCSA SAFER's current status view.

What SAFER doesn't tell you.

The Moat
Insurance Cancellation History
FMCSA publishes insurance cancellation events that SAFER's current-status view doesn't surface. Carriers with multiple cancellations in 24 months represent a specific and underappreciated risk class. This is WeighStation's primary data moat.
FMCSA Insurance History
Hidden Risk
Revocation History
291,848 active carriers have a revocation on their operating authority record. SAFER shows current status only — a carrier reinstated after revocation looks identical to one that was never revoked. WeighStation flags the history.

SMS BASIC Percentile Rankings
FMCSA's Safety Measurement System ranks carriers against peer groups across 7 BASIC categories. WeighStation translates percentile ranks into a single Safety component score — normalizing across fleet sizes and inspection volumes.

Fleet Risk
Fleet Size as Risk Predictor
25.6% of carriers with 500+ trucks score RED tier. Fleet size is the strongest single risk predictor in the dataset — counterintuitive for buyers who assume larger carriers are safer. The data says the opposite.
FMCSA · June 2026
Crash Risk
24-Month Crash Window
WeighStation scores on trailing 24-month crash data — separating current operational risk from accumulated historical counts. Fatal crashes weighted 25x, injury crashes 5x, total crashes 2x in the Crash Risk component.
FMCSA Crash File · 4.93M records
OOS Rate
Out-of-Service Rate
Vehicle and driver OOS rates from SMS data measure inspection failure frequency. High OOS rates are a direct predictor of crash risk and regulatory action. Carriers with vehicle OOS rates above 34% are automatically flagged.

The Score

WeighStation Score

A 100-point composite carrier risk score. Higher scores indicate safer, more stable carriers. Four components, weighted by their predictive value for adverse events. Methodology fully disclosed.

Green
Score 80–100. Low risk. Clean safety record, stable insurance, no revocations.
Yellow
Score 50–79. Moderate risk. One or more elevated signals — elevated inspection failure rate, prior cancellation, or marginal BASIC scores.
Red
Score 0–49. High risk. Multiple stress signals. 1,136 active carriers currently rated RED.

WeighStation Score and risk tiers are AuditPoint derived analytical outputs — not official FMCSA designations. All inputs are sourced from FMCSA federal data with vintage disclosed per report.

Risk Underwriting
Cargo Insurers & Underwriters
Pricing fleet risk before binding coverage. WeighStation surfaces insurance cancellation history, crash frequency, and OOS rates that loss runs and SAFER alone don't provide.
Score every carrier on a submitted fleet list before quoting
Flag carriers with 3+ insurance cancellations as uninsurable
Identify carriers whose OOS rate exceeds your underwriting threshold
Credit & Lending
Lenders & Asset Financiers
Sizing equipment loan exposure to carrier risk profile. Carriers with deteriorating SMS scores or active revocation history represent elevated default risk.
Score carrier at origination before approving equipment financing
Monitor existing borrowers for score deterioration quarterly
Screen portfolio for carriers approaching RED tier threshold
Procurement
Freight Brokers & Shippers
Qualifying carriers before contracting loads. Going beyond basic authority verification to understand the full safety and stability profile of a prospective carrier partner.
Screen carrier DOTs before adding to approved carrier list
Identify carriers whose score has deteriorated since last review
Flag carriers with fatal crash history in trailing 24 months
